In my youth, I dreamed of becoming a missionary bush pilot. The thrill of airplanes, exploration, and adventure fueled my aspirations. Fast forward 40 years, and I find myself working as a financial advisor. How did that happen?

Like many, I initially took jobs to pay the bills. Moving from one job to another, I juggled responsibilities—buying a house, raising a family, and upgrading vehicles. The cycle continued, and I ended up as a grocery store manager. While it paid the bills, it lacked the excitement of airplanes and adventure. Still, those ten years weren’t wasted; I learned valuable teamwork skills.

Then came a turning point—I joined Ameritrade during the late ’90s dot-com boom. Although no airplanes were involved, I immersed myself in a new world. The rapid growth and crashes of internet companies fascinated me. The rush of learning and keeping up with rapidly changing technology drove me. I discovered the qualities of work that truly excited me—exploration and adapting to a changing landscape.

For 26 years, I’ve remained in the investment and financial advice business, continually exploring and seeking adventure. Last year, I started my own business, leaving behind the safety net of a guaranteed paycheck. Now, I learn about new technologies, hone marketing skills, and explore investment strategies. Helping people clarify their financial journeys brings immense satisfaction.

And while I didn’t become a career pilot, I hold a flying license and bought a little airplane for my wife and me to buzz around in.

Here’s are some lessons I’ve learned over the years; perhaps they can help you too:

Identify Your Values and Mission: What drives you? Seek elements of exploration and adventure in your work. Embrace calculated risks based on your unique preferences.

Clarify Your Aspirations: For me, it’s about enabling others to embark on their own adventures through sound financial planning.

Financial Stability: Escape the debt trap. Prioritize cash-flow planning, debt elimination, and savings. Financial freedom empowers your dreams.

Get Qualified: Keep learning—education, certifications, and experience matter. I’m currently pursuing the Certified Financial Planner certification.

Connect with Mentors: Seek wisdom from those who uplift you. Lunches with different people provide valuable insights.

And now, the crucial step:

Get Started: Act! Begin with small steps, avoid distractions, and focus on meaningful activities that propel you forward.

Don’t numb the call for meaningful work. Reach out, connect, and take that leap of faith. Life is too short for anything less.

If you’re ready to join me on this journey, let’s connect—I’d love to learn from you!
